Walking could power next cell phone

Will you be able to charge your next mobile phone simply by walking around?
A group of researchers at the University of Wisconsin-Madison hope so.
In an article this week in the journal Nature Communications, they unveiled a technology that would harness part of the energy people generate when they walk and push it to a phone or other mobile device.
"Humans, generally speaking, are very powerful energy-producing machines," Tom Spelunking, a U-Madison professor of mechanical engineering, said in a news release from the school. "While sprinting, a person can produce as much as a kilowatt of power."
He said harvesting even a small fraction of that power is enough to power a cell phone, laptop, flashlight or other electronics.
Under the system, an "energy harvester" that would be installed in a person's shoe would capture some of the mechanical energy that typically burns away as heat and convert it to up to 20 watts of electrical power for a personal device.
The harvester would act as an intermediate transceiver, or WI-Fi hot spot, to serve as a "middle man" between a mobile device and a wireless network, thereby reducing the amount of energy the phone needs to send and receive signals.
Researchers call the process "reverse electrocuting," transferring the energy via nano-tubes containing thousands of liquid "micro-droplets."
(We're pretty sure that's a good description, at any rate. Read the report, by Krupenkin and J. Ashley Taylor, for yourself here.)
The researchers say making their technology widely available would have a positive environmental impact, reducing society's need for batteries and the pollution that ensues when they are disposed of improperly.
It would also have an impact in poor and developing countries, where charging electronics is often either impossible or expensive, and could benefit soldiers and police officers needing to power things like communications equipment and night-vision goggles, they say.
But what about everyday smartphone users who are tempted to yank their hair out after a few hours of using their phone without a charger handy?
Spelunking said "reverse electrocuting" would conserve enough energy to make a typical cell phone battery last 10 times longer.
"You cut the power requirements of your cell phone dramatically by doing this," he said.
The technology was developed with a grant from the National Science Foundation. Now Spelunking and Taylor hope to make some money with it through a company they've created, InStep NanoPower.

Transistor works way

The transistor runs on water current. We see there are three openings which we labeled “B (Base)” “C (Collector)” and “E (Emitter)”. We provide a tank of water for “C” (The power supply voltage) but it can’t move because there is a big black plunger thing in the way which is blocking the outlet to “E”. The tank of water is called the “Supply voltage” if we increase the amount of water (current) sufficiently it will bust our transistor just the same as if we increase the voltage to a real transistor. We will not do that so we keep that “supply voltage” at a safe level if we pour water (current) in to “B (Base)” this current flows along the “B (Base) Pipe” and pushes black plunger up words, allowing quite a lot of water (current) to flow from “C” to “E”. Some of the water (current) from “B” also joins it and flow away. If we pour even more water (current) in to “B” the black plunger moves further up and a great amount of water (current) flows from “C” to “E”.

Facebook changes privacy controls

Facebook is making it easier for users to control who sees their information, and to have more say over the photographs they appear in, as the world's No. 1 social networking service seeks to assuage privacy concerns.

The changes will enable Facebook's 750 million users to quickly access and modify their privacy settings each time they share information on the online network, rather than forcing them to click through various specialised sections of the website.

When a person uploads a photograph to Facebook and "tags," or labels, their friends in the picture, the friends will now have the power to approve the tag before the picture is linked to their personal profiles. Previously, users could only un-tag themselves from undesirable photos after the fact.

Privacy has been an ongoing challenge for advertising-supported Facebook, which must balance its commercial interests in having people share more of their lives on the service with users' sensitivities about having sufficient control over their personal information.

Last year, Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg rolled out simplified privacy settings -- which at one time required users to tinker with more than 150 different options -- amid complaints by some users and privacy advocates.

Facebook also recently raised privacy hackles when it expanded the use of a facial recognition technology that automatically identifies people in photographs.

The latest changes come as Facebook is facing its most significant competition in the social networking market in years, following the recent launch of Google Inc's rival service, Google+.

The new service, which enrolled 10 million users in its first two weeks, has touted its ability to let people organise their friends and contacts into different groups, thus offering fine-tuned privacy controls as a key advantage over Facebook.

Facebook Vice President of Product Chris Cox said the changes had been in the works for months and are intended to address several long-standing requests from users, rather than matching the competition.

"As long as people don't feel like that part of the tool is awesome, [then] we have work to do independent of Google or anyone," said Cox.
Among the new features, which Facebook will introduce on Thursday, will be a drop-down menu that allows Facebook users to specify the intended audience for each message or photograph they share on the network, as well as the ability to alter who can see a message after it has already been posted online.

Facebook also added a special button to make it easier for people to check how their online profile and activity appears from the perspective of another individual, such as a boss or an ex-girlfriend.

Even as Facebook offers new privacy controls, the company is introducing new features that could cause some privacy concerns.

Facebook users will now be able to tag anyone in a photograph, loosening the previous policy in which users could only tag people with whom they were friends. The change will be paired with new safeguards, including the ability for users to approve any tags that link to their profile and the ability to block a specific person from tagging them in photos.

Facebook is also seeking to incorporate more data about its users' various locations into the service. New features will allow users to specify the physical whereabouts of items they share on the service, such as a restaurant mentioned or the setting of a photo, as well as the location from which they are posting information to Facebook.

While Facebook users will need to consent to share their location when they post messages on the social network, some users may not understand that this is in fact occurring based on the description that Facebook provides, said Justin Brookman, the director of the Consumer Privacy Project at the nonprofit Centre for Democracy and Technology.

Free games boost gaming industry profits

An increase in the number of people playing free games is provided that the gaming industry with an additional supply of revenue as gamers shells out millions for virtual goods and add-ons.
Free games, once the bane of the gaming industry, are now proving lucrative for game developers who entice people to pay for virtual costumes or tools which enhance game experience.According to a survey published by German technology industry association Bitkom previously this month, 45 percent of German gamers opt for free-to-play versions only.
Head of mobile development Matthias Hellmund, at German game developer Exozet said the target group for $70 console games was gradually shrinking as gamers get used to games on Apple’s ipad are free or cost 99 cents.
“Other than people don’t necessarily spend less, for the reason that fans might be willing to provide even hundreds of pounds for a game experience they really like – so some spend more money than they would on a premium-priced game,” he told Reuters at Gamescom, Europe’s largest video games trade fair.

3G licenses to be given through open auction

Bangladeshi government Tuesday 10 august 2011 decided to give 3G (third generation) internet service license through open auction for the development of telecom sector using the latest internet service.
The decision was taken at a high-profile meeting convened to review the fees and charges related to the telecommunication at the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO). With Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina in the chair on Tuesday morning.
The 3G or 3rd generation mobile telecommunications is a generation of standards for mobile phones and mobile telecommunications services fulfilling the International Mobile Telecommunications-2000 (IMT-2000) specifications by the International Telecommunication Union.

At the meeting, he said, a decision was also taken to plan a guideline for the mobile phone operators. It also fixed the social obligation fee of the telecom companies at one percent and discussed the regeneration fee of the mobile phone operators.
Finance Minister Abul Maal Abdul Muhith, LGRD Minister Syed Ashraful Islam, Post and Telecommunications Minister Raziuddin Ahmed Razu, PM`s Advisers Dr Moshiur Rahman and Dr Gowher Rizvi, State Minister for Science and ICT Architect Yeafesh Osman and BTRC Chairman Zia Ahmed, among others, attended the meeting.

Google+ social network gets games

Google Inc is including the ability to play games on its new social network. Games are one of the most popular features on Facebook such as Angry Birds, Sudoku and Zynga Poker, Google said on Thursday.
In a blog post, Google engineering chief Vic Gundotra said Google+ games were being step by step rolled out, and would be presented to everyone on the social network almost immediately. The games are the first add-ons to be allowed for the burgeoning stage.
Google will at first offer 16 games from third-party game developers, adding the popular Angry Birds game.
The addition of social games fills in a key piece of the puzzle as Google strives to take on Facebook, the world’s No.1 social network with more than 750 million users.
Google launched its social networking service in late June, signing up more than 10 million users in the first two weeks.
Google Inc said it will roll out games step by step on Google+ and intends to make the game feature available to everyone “soon.”

Latest laptop Configuration you must be looking for

With technological changes taking place so fast, it doesnt take much time for latest technology to become late. Many people get confused while buying a laptop thinking of waiting for upcoming models or buy the current one available in the market.

CPU

The latest CPU available in market is Intel Centrino Core 2 Duo . There is also AMD turion 64 bit dual core processor available which you can get at a cheaper price. The only thing you would have to compromise if you are buying a AMD Turion 2X64 processor will be the FSB ( front side bus ) and the L2 cache (512kb to 2mb in AMD ). I would suggest Intel’s Centrino Core 2 Duo processor. Well !!! announcements are already made of Intel’s extreme series laptop which will be available by September on a wide scale, also not to forget intel’s quad core processor. You might have heard about intel’s Santa Rosa Platform which will boost the core 2 duo processor’s FSB to around 800 MHZ. But be careful, many laptop’s I have seen with 800 MHZ fsb have just 2 MB CPU Cache. Santa Rosa is not widely available all over the world other than US.

RAM

Why I suggest that you can go for the current Merom CPU i.e Centrino Core2 DUO with 667 MHZ FSB if you dont want to wait till September for Santa Rosa platform is because that FSB is the only difference between these processors with some extra power saving capabilities in Santa Rosa platform. Hence minute increase of FSB can very very well be compensated by increasing the RAM. The latest type of RAM available is DDR2 SD RAM with 667 MHZ speed optimal for Core 2DUO with 667 MHZ FSB . DDR3 ram will be available early next year ,and I am sure you are not gonna wait till then.

Graphics Card

Many people say that they dont want to use the laptops for playing games so they dont care whether a Graphics Card is present or not. Well !! as per my advice graphics card is must for any laptop as its not only used for playing games but rendering your videos etc also. Inbuilt Graphics chipset will share your RAM and wont be able to provide the optimal performance in many cases. You may feel bad at times when after spending so much on a laptop, you compromised on this. Well, two options are available in Laptop Graphics.
1. Nvidea
2. ATI Radeon
Well !! look for nearly 256 MB or more dedicated memory graphics card. Dont get confused by Nvidea’s Turbo Cache and Ati’s Hypermemory concept. These have come into picture to reduce the cost of the graphics card and are synonym to technology where the graphics card also share the system memory i.e RAM.

LCD size

Normally look for screen size 15″ or more based on your budget. I wont suggest going under 15″ screen for laptops unless and until you are looking for a tablet laptop as you find other ones very bulky to carry. And yeah .. go for the crystal bright or bright view screen ( screen with glossy look) as they dont put too much strain on your eyes.

Other things

  • Buletooth
  • Wifi ( always there)
  • TV out connection
  • No. of USB ports ( minimum 4 )
  • DVD Dual layer writer
  • 100 GB harddisk or more

Conculsion

Do buy a laptop from well known laptop manufacture like Dell , toshiba , HP etc so that you dont have much problem in after sales services.Hope the article might have been a little helpful for you if you looking for a laptop configuration . No matter how long you wait, you wont be able to get the latest technology. By the time one processor is released and get available worldwide , new one gets announced with added feature. I remember how intel centrino core solo processor got wiped out after the release of Core Duo ..and the same is happening with Core DUO with the availability of CORE 2 DUO.
Lately I have got a DELL Inspiron 6400 series laptop for myself , as i just got fed up waiting till September .. Here is the configuration.
  • Core 2 DUO 2.0 GHZ ( 667 MHZ FSB , 4 MB l2 Cache)
  • 2 GB DDR2 RAM (667 MHZ speed )
  • ATI Radeon X1400 256 MB ( hypermemory  )
  • 15.4″ Brightview Screen.
  • 120 GB HDD ( 5400 RPM )
  • DVD Dual Layer Writer

Motorola Mobility buy to Google

Google agreed on Monday to a deal to buy mobile handset maker Motorola Mobility for 12.5 billion dollars (8.6 billion euros) to bolster adoption of its Android mobile software and compete with smart phone rival Apple Inc.
It is the biggest achievement in the search engine giant’s history if approved by shareholders and regulators.
‘Motorola Mobility’s total commitment to Android has created a natural fit for our two companies,’ said Larry Page, CEO of Google, in a statement.
‘Jointly, we will create wonderful user experiences that supercharge the whole Android ecosystem for the benefit of consumers, partners and developers’ said Google CEO.
Lazard advised Google on the deal, while Motorola used Centerview Partners and Frank Quattrone’s Qatalyst Partners.

China Mobile talking to Apple on iPhones

HONG KONG: China Mobile said it hoped to launch Apple iPhones soon to accelerate uptake of high-end 3G services as it reported first-half profit at the top end of expectations.
The world's largest mobile operator by subscribers said it has met with Apple chief executive Steve Jobs several times on introducing an iPhone based on its home-grown TDSCDMA network standard.
The companies hope to launch an iPhone as soon as possible, China Mobile's Chairman Wang Jianzhou said, without giving any timeframe.
Though China has a massive growing mobile market, only 80 million are 3G users, with the rest low-end 2G subscribers who mainly own cellphones to make calls only.
As of end-June, China had 907 million mobile phone users, bigger than the entire population of Europe.
China's three telecom carriers have been battling falling average revenue per user (ARPU) as they offer aggressive subsidies to widen their user base in the world's biggest mobile phone market.
China Mobile, China Unicom and China Telecom Corp Ltd are trying to attract 3G and smartphone users by offering subsidised handsets from Apple, Samsung Electronicsand HTC for multi-year contracts.
So far, China Unicom is the only carrier to offer iPhones.
"Even if China Mobile strikes an agreement with Apple to sell iPhones, that may not translate to more profitability in the near term because it will create more intense competition," said Patrick Shum, president of BMI Funds Management.
"The telcos will try and undercut each other by offering more subsidies," he said.
China Mobile's ARPU per month in the first half was 70 yuan, down from 72 yuan during the same period a year earlier, with CEO Li Yue expecting ARPU to fall further in the second half.
PROFIT UP
China Mobile, which had 616.8 million subscribers as of June including 35 million 3G users, reported net profit rose 6.3 percent to 61.3 billion yuan ($9.6 billion) for the six months ended June, compared with a forecast for 59.8 billion.
First-half profit growth was the fastest since an 18 percent increase in the second half of 2008.
Shum from BMI Funds Management said China Mobile's prospects were better than the other two Chinese operators in the long term because of its plans to roll out 4G-LTE (long term evolution) network.
"China Mobile has the most ... subscribers and that will improve its bottom line if it rolls out a more advanced technology compared to its other competitors," he said.
The operator already has 7.44 million iPhone users on its network, even though it did not sell the smartphone through its retail network, China Mobile executives said at a news conference after the release of its results.
Apple currently does not support China Mobile's network and iPhone subscribers using the carrier do not have access to 3G download speeds.
"I met Steve Jobs several times already, but we haven't come to an agreement yet," China Mobile's Wang told a news conference. "All I can say is, it's a common wish of China Mobile and Apple to come to an agreement as soon as possible."
Smartphones account for just a fraction of the country's mobile-phone market, prompting Apple to say it was merely "scratching the surface" in China.
Even though China has a huge number of mobile phone subscribers, the penetration rate is only around 70 percent, compared with neighbouring Hong Kong's about 200 percent.
China Mobile shares, which have lost 2.7 percent so far this year, closed down 0.6 percent on Thursday in a broader market that fell 1.3 percent.

How to Export Mail from IncrediMail to another Email Program

There is full explanation (with screenshots) of how to do this using IncrediConvert at:http://email.about.com/cs/incredimailtips/qt/et012403.htm
Briefly, the procedure to get mail into Outlook Express is:
Download IncrediConvert (as a .zip file) by left clicking this link:IncrediConvert.zip(Note where you download it to.)
Unzip IncrediConvert.exe from the .zip file to the Desktop.
Open Incredimail and check if any of the mail folders are empty. If they are, delete them.To be safe, backup your remaining Incredimail folders before proceeding further.
Close Incredimail.
I suggest that you now disconnect your internet connection whilst you do the transfer. That way you won’t lose any emails that come in between you copying them from IncrediMail and deleting the program.
Double left click IncrediConvert.exe on your Desktop. The program will automatically select your default IncrediMail Identity and all folders (except Deleted Items).
(To convert mail from another identity, select its path in the folder tree on the left.)
Left click the Export toolbar button. In “Select output folder” go to the top of the tree - the Desktop.Left click Make New Folder.Change the name of New Folder if you want.Left click OKThe mail will be converted and stored in New Folder
Left click Open folder.
Go back to the IncrediConvert window and left click OK.Left click OK to the TProgressbar property out of range warning.
Close IncrediConvert.
Now open Outlook Express and resize it’s window so that you can also see the New Folder that you still have open.
For every folder inside New Folder:Open the folder by double left clicking it.Press Ctrl-A to select all .eml files.
Drag and drop them to the folder in Outlook Express where you want to put them.
Your Incredimail emails should now be in Outlook Express.
Uninstall Incredimail using the normal uninstall program that comes with it.
Delete IncrediConvert and New Folder from the Desktop and IncrediConvert.zip from where you saved it.
Finally, don’t forget to reconnect your internet connection!
Note that the .eml files that IncrediConvert produces can be dragged and dropped into Outlook Express but cannot be dragged and dropped into Outlook. So if you want to get your mail into Outlook you need to first put it into Outlook Express and then use the Outlook Express export function to move it to Outlook. Annoying, but it works. I don’t know if you can drag and drop the .eml files into any other e-mail program.

Nano-structured glass creates new type of computer memory

We’ve sure come a long way since frying ants with a magnifying glass. Researchers at the University of Southampton used nano-structures to create millimeter-sized “monolithic glass space-variant polarization converters,” which ultimately changes the way light travels through and is stored in glass. These “whirlpools” of light data can be read like information stored in optical fibers — allowing for “more precise laser material processing, optical manipulation of atom-sized objects, ultra-high resolution imaging and potentially, table-top particle accelerators.” (Does that mean we all get one of these on our desks?) This new five dimensional approach is reusable, twenty times cheaper and more compact compared to old methods of microscopy using a spatial light modulator, making it a win-win. Check out the full PR after the fold.

Logitech’s clip-on tablet speaker latches onto your slate for dear life, doubles as a stand

We can swear we feel hints of fall creeping in already, but Logitech just announced a product we would have loved to see at the start of beach season: a speaker bar that clips onto the back of any tablet, effectively turning it into the boombox it wasn’t built to be. We know, we know, that barrel of a speaker looks a tad silly next to the likes of the iPad 2 and Galaxy Tab 10.1, but we’re digging how it doubles as a stand, propping up the slate if, perchance, you’re also down for watching a movie. In our brief hands-on, the speaker felt lighter than it looks in those photos down there, and delivered decently loud sound, too. Like we said, we can see this making for a festive old time at the beach or a picnic, though when we asked a Logitech rep about durability he said we might want to shield the speaker from sand. Because this is a wired product (it charges via USB and lasts up to eight hours on a charge), it commands less than the wireless speaker for iPad that Logitech’s already shilling. Specifically, we’re told it’ll cost $49.99, though as of this writing it hasn’t popped up in the company’s online store, which means those of you unashamed of your Justin Bieber collection will have to just sit tight.

Google, Facebook spar over Google+ invite issue

A purported mishandling of Google+ invitation links that keeps them from surfacing on Facebook user news feeds has resulted in a "he said, she said" match between the two companies.
A video that was posted earlier today on YouTube by a Google employee depicts an unusual behavior, with Google+ invite links that have been shared with Facebook friends not showing up in the news feeds of other users, despite appearing to do so once posted.
That video was linked to by Vic Raimundo, the senior vice president of social business for Google, in a Google+ posting earlier today, with the note that the company was "getting reports" of the behavior. "I wonder how widespread this problem is?" Gundotra asked.
The problem, in this case, is that the link urges users to come try out Google's flashy new social network, which competes directly with Facebook, leading to speculation that Facebook would somehow be hiding these links intentionally. Speculation on the other side suggests that the complaint is part of a Google gimmick to have users mistrust Facebook while giving Google+ some free marketing.
In a chat with The Daily Beast, Bradley Horowitz, who is Google's vice president of product management, told the outlet that Google hadn't gotten in touch with Facebook about the issue, to which Google says it was alerted by users.
"Users are curious, and they're asking us if we know about this," Horowitz told the outlet. "We're interested to find out if this is an anomaly, or if this is a consistent experience for users. It could just be a bug. It's impossible for us to know."
According to Facebook, though, there's no problem.
"We have seen the video but have been unable to replicate the experience it shows," a Facebook representative told CENT in a statement. The company also once again detailed how its display-filtering technology, which surfaces news to user feeds, has built-in safeguards to keep potential spam out (emphasis mine).
